The Book of Three by Lloyd Alexander

While this book presents a simple and entertaining fantasy story, this is definitely intended for young readers. The writing is a bit choppy and does not flow the way I am used to fantasy stories flowing. Given it was written in the 60s, that may contribute to the writing style as well. A great story, even if it is playing off of Tolkien for a younger set. I would not oppose my own kids reading this but cannot say I would go out of my way to encourage it either.

I thoroughly enjoyed the first book in this series, On a Pale Horse, and was looking forward to reading the rest. While the first couple of chapters grabbed me, once Norton took the job as Chronos the story took a few turns and became choppy. It was as if each chapter was a short story all on its own having little bearing on the story overall. I would have enjoyed this when I was 12, but now at 30, this was entirely meh. So drab that I have no desire to read the other three books in this series.
