I received an eARC of this book from NetGalley and the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

The scope of this novel--covering three generations' worth of family history and trauma--is vast, so naturally there are so many topics to cover that it would be impossible to go into depth about all of them. Despite my knowing this, however, I was disappointed that the novel didn't quite deliver on that front. Nonetheless, I'm impressed Khong's storytelling and enjoyed the distinct voices of the three characters (Lily, May, and Nick).

Really loved this book!! It took a while to set up the deeper meaning of this book, but once we got there, I  loved it. I like Nick’s narration the best, simply because I felt he was the most relatable of all of them. I kinda lost interest in the later portion of the book when it switched to May’s POV, but it it picked back up eventually. I loved the family drama aspect of this book and how it intertwined discussion of racism, nationality, and what they belie is a “real American”

I loved how each plot point was doled out. I felt curious and excited to continue reading.

THERE IS SO MUCH GOING ON HERE. Genetic engineering, Chinese and American history, family, privilege, race and a sliver of magic. How did Rachel Khong seamlessly weave all of these massive themes together through a story told in multiple generations? Incredible.

This book had some good parts, but overall didn’t go anywhere very interesting. The last section was the most disappointing.
