Audiobook! Loved this. Exactly my kind of “almost no plot, multi-generational family saga” type book.

The writing in this book is beautiful and I still enjoyed the storytelling of each of the main characters in their perspectives. However, I kept waiting for a big reveal and it felt like the book was building to something, only for it to fall flat in that regard. There were also pieces of the storyline that just kind of felt thrown in with no real point. Overall it was good and I enjoyed it throughout, but I was ultimately left disappointed when I finished.

Wonderful, meaty lit fic about 3 generations of a family. The audio narration is also excellent.

I really enjoyed this amazing multi-generational Chinese immigrant family saga. I have so many questions after finishing it; I really wish Khong had given more insight and details to the other two characters. I did not want it to end …

4.5⭐️ This was a compelling, engrossing read. I loved the structure of the novel, and I found the writing style unique in a way that made me want to keep reading. The first half of the book was the strongest part for me, but each section (Lily, Nick, May) all had poignant parts (and in the case of May, extremely informative as I really don’t know much about the Cultural Revolution). I feel like the book lost some momentum towards the end, but the story was still woven together in a clever, satisfying way. Definitely recommend.
