This is the second book in the Anne of Green Gables series.

This book starts with Anne, aged 16 (!) and beginning a two-year stint at the local school as a teacher. I cannot imagine being a teacher at this age (that's how old my sister is and I certainly wouldn't trust her with a schoolroom of impressionable children). She also faces new challenges with a crabby male bachelor neighbor and taking in a set of twins, sweet Dora and exuberant Davy. Meanwhile Anne still has time to get up to some of her usual crazy adventures and misfires in addition to pondering the bizarre behavior of the handsome Gilbert Blythe and her feelings toward him.

I just want to say that I was very disappointed with the lack of Gilbert in this book. At this point in time, he is teaching in a different place so it makes sense that they wouldn't be able to interact much. However the later books better make that deficiency up to me as I adore Anne and Gilbert and can't wait for them to get together! Gilbert seems aware that they are a great couple but Anne isn't yet decided.

While I loved just about everything about the first book, sometimes Anne's imaginings and descriptions grated on me a bit. I love reading about pretty much every character, the crabby, the gossipy, the sweet, the dull, no matter what they're doing. But sometimes Anne has to describe just exactly how something looks and I don't fully appreciate it. I like action more than description and I was sometimes a bit bored in this book.

Happily there are still some great episodes such as Anne's determination to never beat a student, being sorely tried and Anne's little foray into matchmaking. There are many funny stories and many sweet moments. However I would describe the mood as very upbeat and cheerful rather than sad, which is good because it leaves me smiling and eager for the next book.

Overall: A fine outing with Anne even if it didn't quite serve up what I wanted!

Annan elämä nuorena opettajaneitinä on kuvattu yhtä ihastuttavasti, kujeilevasti, kauniisti ja herttaisesti kuin ensimmäisen osan lapsuusvuodetkin.

This book is about girlhood and growing up and becoming a woman and sitting in your basement crying over a book from childhood that perfectly captures the way everything is changing

Also this is not poetical at all but it needs to be said: Davy is a little shit and I feel so bad for Dora because she gets like 3 lines and she’s perfectly well behaved so they don’t like her as much as her brother Jesus lord

How can one possible rate a favorite series. My goodness, I'm falling in love with Anne and Gilbert (especially Gilbert) all over again. I will always love Anne, but perhaps I connect a bit more with Gilbert who dreams but has his feet more firmly planted on the ground of reality.

This is the literary equivalent of a mug of hot tea. It's the first time I was reading this as a parent, so I read the scenes with Davy and Dora much differently. The whole thing just tugged harder on my heart than before.

This book diverged further from the movie than the first, but it stands to reason, fitting in episodes that must be from later books. I enjoyed more parts that were completely new to me, like the bits with Charlotte Morgan and Miss Lavendar. The slowly developing relationship with Gilbert is very nice, as well. I'll be reading the next one, at least.

My only complaint about this one was Davy. He needed to be spanked. Other than that I enjoyed Anne's new adventures and I look forward to the next book. I think I already own it so that is a plus.

-Anne was a sweet-souled lass, but she could instill some venom into innocent italics when occasion required.

-"Well, we all make mistakes, dear, so just put it behind you. We should regret our mistakes and learn from them, but never carry them forward into the future with us."

-"Living so that you beautify your name, even if it wasn't beautiful to begin with...making it stand in people's thoughts for something so lovely and pleasant that they never think of it by itself."

-"...and I never want to to stray from my own vine and fig tree again." (Love the Hamilton reference!) (okay maybe it is from the Bible...)
