I don’t like the way the FMC’s deafness is treated. Yes, due to the times it’s supposed to be fitting, but having the MMC basically think “oh she’s only HALF ‘daft’”when he finds out she’s deaf is not a vibe. Also when he thought she was fully ‘addled’ he kept thinking how much he wanted to have sex with her even though she didn’t have all of her mental faculties. He wouldn’t act on it, but the thoughts were still there. Made me uncomfy.

3 1/2 ⭐️ I was after an easy read to get me out of my book slump, and this old school romance was just the ticket.

Pretending to be daft to get away from an abusive douchebag is some next level shit. Keeping up that charade to the point where everyone thinks your beyond LaLaLoopsy for years seems almost genius. Can't end up in an abusive marriage if everyone thinks your several cards short of a stack. Finding true love anyway, worth it.

I wish Goodreads would allow half stars. I would give this book 3.5 stars. I really enjoyed it, but there were some weaknesses that keep me from giving it 4 stars.

Short Review

The way this book took a hold of my heart and didn't let go.

I loved it.

No, I loved Eveline. She is who held my heart the whole time reading. I love heroines like her: gentle, kind, and soft-- yet fierce. Ready to brave whatever she may face, whether or not she has the strength matters not-- she has the heart.

And of course her newly wedded husband becomes pudding in her hands.

Eveline and Graeme's romance is gorgeous. I loved every bit of it. I loved how even when he tried to keep away from her, when he thought she was nothing more than daft, he was intrigued by her, allured by her, connected to her. He was so respectful and gentle with her-- never blaming her for the sins of her family. Fiercely protective and eventually fiercely loving.

The only hiccup for me is the story lost some steam once the truth of Eveline's deafness surfaced, but the last act brought heightened the engagement once more, allowing for a thrilling finish.

This romance is low-stakes, but it will complete you whole-heartedly.

A non toxic Male lead in a highlander romance? We love to see it. So cute!! I love that they really subverted a lot of tropes including the miscommunication trope and that Graeme just wanted to take care of her.
