This is a comfort read that I find myself thinking about and rereading time and time again. The plot, writing, and characters are pretty mediocre (and sometimes cringe) but they’re done in a way that is very entertaining. I’m normally very picky when it comes to trope ridden books, but this one does it well in my opinion.

4.5/5 - It had been quite some time since the last time a book had caught my attention in such a way, really! Most of the times I thought I knew where the story was going, I was always pleasantly surprised to know it took a different turn, and for that I praise it. Perhaps the fact that I don't quite buy Baldair's excuses for some of his actions made me question the character building a bit, but I can't wait to see more of Vhalla and Aldrik. While I haven't purchased the second book, you bet I will! I will hold my hopes high for a Spanish translation, because I think this books definitely deserves it.

"I wanted to see you well and happy. I wanted to see you flourish, and I wanted only a small piece. To know that, in you, I had made something good. And I truly wanted to keep you from pain.”

THAT'S LOVE, BABY!

I found this series quite randomly by seeing a quote online and arbitrarily borrowing it from the library simply because it was available. Look, the quarantine is Doing Something to me and I'm trying to entertain myself!!! I didn't quite know where this was going but I knew as soon as there was a GALA mentioned that shit would Go Down At The Gala (I've seen regency era period dramas...I know what DANCING does to people who Might be in love)... but other than that, this took me for a wild ride. I loved Vhalla even though I had to google her name pronunciation because I kept calling her Valhalla in my brain. I loved the library apprenticeship; I loved that she confronted a lot of the prejudices in her world and how it shaped her/her friends/her self esteem. Also, love the Power of a Short Haircut to show that a character has gone through something. Listen, men may not understand, but women get that cutting your hair off is VERY FREEING!!!!

Okay, also, the Romance... we love a slow burn, folks! We love a Goth Prince!!! WE LOVE FORBIDDEN FEELINGS FOR A MENTOR WHO IS ALSO THE CROWN PRINCE... God, I'm alone... okay, well, anyway this relationship was fascinating and gripped me from the first "interaction" I also must say that I love when characters somehow become bounded to one another by magic.

Anyway this book seriously surprised me and I'm excited to read the rest of this series!!!

This was an excellent series opener book. The world building was very thorough and we were introduced to a diverse cast of characters. Vhalla is a very compelling main character with a lot of depth. While not a lot happens to drive the plot other than Vhalla needing to make a choice about whether or not to keep her magic, the decision is taken out of her hands when an attack leads Vhalla to be accused of multiple crimes.

Vhalla's strength of character is shown as the book comes to a close and she faces the hard road she has ahead of her.

Schade also!

Capturing

This book is wonderful. The details and history that this author created cannot go unnoticed. Once I gave this book a chance read the first chapter I knew I’d be following this Windwalker to the end of her journey. I am off to the next book but I wanted to make sure I told anyone who would listen to take a breath and jump in.
