“Funny Story” is so far my favorite Emily Henry book but that might be because I really related to the general plot, sometimes to the point of being a little uncomfortable. But it was a cute story and did give me some hope that happiness can be found in other people and other pursuits if life doesn’t go the way you plan.

My library hold finally came in for “The People We Meet on Vacation” so I finally got to read the wildly popular romance book.

This was one of Emily Henry’s stronger books, with well rounded characters and a believable romance between the two. The plot was fun and well paced and the writing was tight.

I don’t think it quite lives up to the hype, but it was still a fun read.

Not my favourite Holly Black book but a Holly Black faerie story is still a Holly Black faerie story so it’s still a fun read.

The “Hunger Games” is a modern classic. What else is there to say?

I read “Sabriel” when I was in high school, one of the first teen books I ever read. Since that was…a while ago…I didn’t remember much of the story so I was looking forward to the reread.

“Sabriel” was better than I remembered (ignoring the fact that I only remembered half a dozen scenes from the whole book). It was a classic high fantasy adventure with spooky twists, great humor, and interesting characters. It kept me hooked and bumped  the sequels up on my TBR!

I loved the idea of “A Sorceress Comes to Call” but the pacing seemed off. Very little happened for 3/4 of the book and then everything happened!
Women's Diaries of the Westward Journey by Lillian Schlissel

Rather dense read but a good resource (although perhaps not a great one).

The commentary at the beginning was good and made me consider some aspects of women’s experiences on the trails before—such as wanting to keep their petticoats and aprons neatly bleached and starched when they arrived to hold on to some semblance of traditional femininity.

The photographs and  transcriptions of several diaries were an excellent resource.

It’s good for what it is—a picture book for adults.
Tomboy Bride: A Woman's Personal Account of Life in Mining Camps of the West by Harriet Fish Backus

“Tomboy Bride” gives a great look into the lives of those who worked in Western gold mines, focusing on domestic aspects. Harriet Fish Backus also shared her first hand accounts of how miners and their families dealt with the extreme altitude and harsh winters at some of these mines.

If you pardon the pun, there were also some excellent nuggets about stamp mills as well, which was of particular interest to me.

The tone is fun and the variety of topics covered keeps the reader’s interest hooked on Backus’s words. There are some abrupt transitions after sharing stories of people dying or experiencing horrible accidents, but that was just a part of life in mining camps.

For anyone interested in that period of American history, this would be a great read.

“Spectacular” is a cute holiday novella from Stephanie Garber, set after the events of her Caraval trilogy.

The book was fun and held the same amount of fairytale whimsy that Garber is so known for, but I personally wish it had featured a lot more Scarlett and Julian and a lot less Tella.
