Thankless in Death by J.D. Robb
3.0
This is my "Bedtime" series...the series of books I read to put me to sleep every night. I love them. They are my comfort food for reading.
This one wasn't bad, but there was so much POV from the killer and he was such a giant piece of garbage - I see you J.D. Robb and I bet it was fun to write him - but the injustice of him constantly getting away even though he was an absolute moron was sending my anxiety through the roof.
I also appreciate that it was driving Eve crazy as well.
Well written, always great Eve and Roarke bits (plus we get Morris in this one!), just tough on me because of my own hang ups. Still recommend.
And on to the next one!

Cinder by Marissa Meyer

Conceptually, the idea felt inspired, but I hoped for something else. I was thinking of a SciFi fantasy crossover - a cyborg Cinderella story could be fantastic, right? But it wasn't as progressive as I expected. The world-building kind of just stopped; the characters are mildly likable, one dimensional, and somehow the story, even though war and slavery are central themes, is still about marriage and a ball.
It wasn't inspired; it was just an updated interpretation of Cinderella. Same story same beats, except for the ending, which would have been more impactful if the rest of the story hadn't followed so closely to its predecessor.
And the writing itself was stiff.
It wasn't horrible, but it simply wasn't for me. I will not be reading any more of the series.
