The Cold Vanish: Seeking the Missing in North America's Wildlands by Jon Billman

adventurous informative reflective sad

5.0

Jon Billman takes great care in representing the people that go lost in the wild lands and their families. This book is thorough and informative, emotional but still inspiring. Jon captures human wonder from all angles, and his use of storytelling mixed with facts results in a very effective method for sharing the sad but somehow still hopeful story of a father searching for his lost son.

Did not finish book. Stopped at 14%.
All the characters are unbearable. I’m all for a morally corrupted hot guy, but Diesel especially is deplorable in an irredeemable way and I couldn’t stand the thought that the FMC would find him acceptable in any way. Endless descriptions of “internal darkness” and unnecessary obsession with Roxy after barely meeting her. Every paragraph felt like it was trying hard to be deep and quotable.

While Glinda is never explicitly identified as autistic, I saw a lot of myself in this main character. For everyone who doesn’t understand my thought process or where I am in my head sometimes, my anxieties and abstract way of thinking, I wish I could have them read this book. Maybe it would clarify absolutely nothing, but there was nothing about this character that I didn’t understand and I really loved that. Glinda portrays many characteristics that we identify in women with autism that differentiate from the current diagnostic criteria, and having been grieving and coping with my own diagnosis the past few months, this book helped me mourn and process in a way I didn’t expect. Emily, thank you for writing a character, regardless of Glinda’s neurotype, that I identified with in ways that I’ve never identified with another human being.

TJ Klune is a master of building lovable characters and cozy homes. There is nothing more beautiful than seeing through the flaws of someone and watching as they reach their potential, and this author illustrates this perfectly.
