I prefered the first half over the second half which I felt dragged for a while. The perspective of the book wasn't really what I expected, but I enjoyed Krakauer's writing style and the narration of the audiobook was great too!

The story is really fascinating, but the writing style couldn't hold my attention. Part 2 was better, but by then I felt I had skimmed so much of part 1 that I was no longer keeping up with the information. I think I'll try it again someday in audio form

There parts of the story that focuses on the Garden and Dickon, I though were really sweet and great. But the first third is just full of so much racism, both in amount and degree, that I considered dnf'ing

***spoilers***
His wife tries to take her life and the text is just him justifying that If she doesn't make it, he at least tried. And it also takes time to make it VERY CLEAR he DOESN'T love her. And then he's upset with her for abandoning their children, when he's basically done so himself, though without having any reason too???
And he's a negligent parent, but blames his wife for being one as well??? "He never got used to being a parent" YOUR KIDS ARE SEVEN YEARS OLD.

I only got through the prologue before deciding I was done with this book, and thus, the series. It is possibly, the worst introduction to a romantic lead I've ever read in a romance novel.
