In no particular order: 1. I thought this was a witch book LOL it isn't 2. I saw a review that says there is both racism and Islamaphbia and with the tensions of the world, I'd rather not support a book with either of those so 3. Seems like its got "Lights Off" plot but I'm not in the mood for that regardless
I think I enjoyed this book, but I really loved the first book so it just didn’t meet the high level of love I had for the first book. The main characters were lovable, and I would argue even more relatable than some of the other characters, but I do feel like they were almost one dimensional in their personality, especially the FML.
This book actually auto returned while I was on vacation and only in reviewing my StoryGraph that I realize I hadn’t finished it when I was about 50% of the way through and I considered DNF in it, but I did like it enough to want to finish it.
I really liked Keeley. I think there were some things in this book's plot I could see coming a mile away but there were still some plot points that could have been "tighter" for lack of better working vs expecting us to fill in blanks - my biggest example would be why did rionna never visit Keeley to just tell her she believed her but she can't see her anymore? or just something other than not ever saying anything to her for forever many years even though she knew exactly where she lived and could send people to her....idk seems like a weak friend on rionna's part lol
Ok anyways Alaric was cute bc he is a nice "golden balance" of his two brothers as the middle child. I like how he fell in love and was genuinely trying to just do the right thing and even thought i knew it was a romance and it damn well needed a happy ending i was crying when Keeley was hit by the arrow to save him bc his despair honestly filled me with despair too so 10/10 on that climax
Ok soooo like why are these books soooo binge-able??? I love that Mairin was such a divergent character having spent ten years at an abbey she is caring and kind but also stubborn and resourceful. She pushed Ewan but was also not overly unreasonable or whatever.
I also love that compared to poor Eveline from Never Seduce a Scott, she’s folded into the clan so lovingly 🥹
Someone says the ML is misogynistic and I won’t say he isn’t at all but it wasn’t that bad, I think it fell in that “outlander’s” vibe and though he was all about “obedience” she still does what she wants and he lives so idk I think the point was he’s all bluster. Regardless, my standard for historical men is a lot lower than a contemporary man for sure lol
Eeeep not the duo I was anticipating but a duo we all needed. I loved Bowen and Genevieve. The FML was definitely complex in many ways but made many noble sacrifices.
Though the climax was appropriate it felt … stupid compared the the states of the first book LOL like why did neither of them originally think they could get married in a few months or a year after being with her family?
